Unless you are brain dead, you have noticed that most businesses are recruiting team members.
“We’re Hiring” signs are posted in every store and restaurant, companies are offering signing bonuses, and 100% of my clients are seeking employees.
The number one comment that I hear from business owners is, “I can’t find good help.”
If you are saying “I can’t find good help”, you are likely not making team building a priority, you don’t know how to attract top talent or both.
I just helped a law firm hire an administrator from over 100 candidates. Yes; right now, you’ll have to work harder to attract top talent, but it’s not impossible.
Step 1- Who?
Hiring is Marketing. When you make a marketing plan, you first determine your ideal client profile.
In this environment, you must market for top talent. Your first step is to determine your ideal team member, and work hard to attract them.
On a single sheet of paper, make a list of attitudes, skills, and other characteristics to determine your ideal candidate. (If you’d like a simple worksheet, just reply to this e-mail and put HIRE in the subject line).
You’ll end up with 20 or 30 words on the paper. If you can get 80% of that, you’ll have a great candidate.
Hint: Attitudes are the most important category. Most people get fired for a bad attitude. In most cases, it is better to hire for a culture fit first, and then make sure they have the skills you need.
Step 2- What?
This is generally called a positional description. There are only two really important things in a good positional description: Outcomes and Measurements.
What are the outcomes you want from the person in the position and how are you going to measure their performance towards those outcomes?
Write them down in detail.
