Have you ever really worked out what you’re about, what your true identity is, where you are now, and where you’d like to go?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. We’ve been involved in starting a community, starting a tribe, if you will, and I’ll get back to that later.
One of the first things that my coach recommended that we do to build the tribe was to develop a manifesto.
So, what the heck is a manifesto anyway?
It turns out that a manifesto is a group of policies or aims. It’s usually applied to politics. In politics, it would be your platform.
Political campaigns have gotten truly, truly nasty lately. Maybe that’s what it takes to win. I hope not.
I remember seeing an interview with the late Claude Pepper – He was a Senator first, from the state of Florida, and then later joined the House of Representatives, which is backward from how a lot of political careers happen.
In his mind, Mr. Pepper lost his re-election bid to the Senate because he refused to be a mudslinger.
And the question is, why?
We must first understand a little bit about how our brains work.
We notice the negative.
So, the theory is that in Stone Age times, if you were walking outside of your cave with your kids, you would want to know if there were a dinosaur or saber-tooth tiger getting ready to pounce. Our natural stance is to notice things that are out of place.
For example, if you walk into a room with six paintings on the wall, you’ll notice the one that is crooked, versus the five that are perfectly aligned. We’re just wired that way as humans.
So what? It means that if we end up focusing on the negative, we’re just going to get more of the negative. Let’s say you are a golfer, and you’re standing on a tee box on par three where you have to hit the ball over the water.
You say to yourself, “Don’t hit it in the water, don’t hit it in the water, don’t hit it in the water.” You’re likely to do what? You’re likely to hit it in the water.
And if you focus on the positive, you’ll get more of the positive. In the same golf situation, you say, “Hit it on the green, hit it on the green, hit it on the green,” then likely you are going to hit it on the green, or at least get it over the water.
It’s not 100% because your golf game might not be that great. But I know for a fact that it’s pretty close to 100% that when you get those negative thoughts creeping into your mind, you end up hitting the ball in the water.
So, what does that mean for us?
Well, number one, in our daily lives, we need to eliminate the negative words- the negative language.
We need to eliminate “no“, “can’t“, “don’t“, “won’t“ from our vocabulary, and flip it around to positive language. Focus on what we want more of, which is what the manifesto is all about.
As part of this process of building this community, building this tribe if you will, my coach said, “You must have a manifesto.” It’s really the same thing as a group of “I am” statements or affirmations.
Here’s ours:
• I have an abundance of cash.
• Great people are attracted to me.
• I am working in my zone of genius.
• In order to serve others, I must first take care of myself.
• I have clarity of purpose.
• Perfect clients show up daily.
• I am planful and proactive.
• I am a lifelong learner.
• I know my numbers and make decisions based on facts.
• I am focused and determined.
• My goals become my reality.
• I am balanced, making sure I invest time in my sports and my hobbies.
• I invest in myself.
• I take regular family vacations.
• As I develop my people, I develop myself and truly live my purpose.”
That’s our manifesto, and if that manifesto resonates with you, then you belong as part of our community. The group is for business owners and entrepreneurs who want to build better and EPIC lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.
